FanDuel Price: $7,100
Why He Will Go Overlooked:
John Lackey, the most expensive pitcher on the slate at $9,000, takes the bump for the World Champion Chicago Cubs. In addition, strikeout ace Vincent Velasquez, who whiffed 10 hitters in his first start of 2017, stands out on the slate.
Shelby Miller of the Arizona Diamondbacks starts 2017 coming off a rocky 2016 campaign. Miller posted a 5.13 SIERA and career-worst 15.2% strikeout rate last season, so he's unlikely to be a super-appealing target.
Why You Should Use Him:
Despite all of the challenges Miller faced last year, his stock is quietly on the uptick thanks to an increase in velocity. Miller posted an average fastball velocity of 95.7 miles per hour in his first start, although it's important to keep in mind that the way velocity is measured has slightly changed in the offseason.
Miller looked like he was working his way back into his old form as he struck out seven hitters in that debut outing.
Today, he will also will get to face a San Francisco Giants offense without catcher Buster Posey, who's hitting the concussion disabled list. All of this could lead to a big day at AT&T Park, which ranked dead last for power in 2016, per ESPN'S Park Factors.
