Tonight, the Boston Red Sox have a 4.51 implied team total against the aforementioned Chris Archer. If we're avoiding Archer, it stands to reason we should target some Sox bats, no?
The problem is despite all of Archer's career issues against the Red Sox, he can still strike out guys with the best of them, and has fairly neutral splits. Last year, he had a 27.1% strikeout rate against righties, and a 27.8% rate against lefties. His overall 2016 strikeout rate is third-best on the slate, behind only Kershaw and Syndergaard.
Don't get me wrong, Andrew Benintendi is awesome. He only has four strikeouts in 41 plate appearances on the young season, but with 12 other games to choose from, do you really want to test him against this kind of firepower?
Like with Archer, one could argue using a Red Sox stack in the event his Boston struggles continue. But overall, the stats say Archer and the Red Sox cancel each other out. There will be better days to use Benintendi and the rest of the Sox.
