For a while there, Jason Vargas looked like a surprise fantasy stud after a putting up an elite 28.9% strikeout rate in April, despite having a fastball under 90 miles per hour.

Alas, small samples sizes strike again.

His season strikeout rate now sits at 21.0%, following a May in which he had just a 15.8% rate. You might peek at his 11.5% swinging-strike rate and think a bounce-back is in order, but his May rate was just 9.5%.

He's still managed to keep up a 2.39 ERA, but a 4.19 SIERA under the hood is probably closer to his real talent level.

It was fun while it lasted, but it looks like the jig is up.
