Michael Conforto has been a stud this season. Overall, he has put up a .410 wOBA with 19 jacks in 319 plate appearances. He's a star.
While the sample size is small (70 plate appearances), Conforto has even been solid against lefties in 2017, racking up a .340 wOBA and 38.5% hard-hit rate against same-sided hurlers.
But tonight he's facing a lefty -- Clayton Richard -- who has absolutely dominated left-handed hitters this season. Richard has pitched his way to a 20.3% strikeout rate and 4.5% walk rate versus lefties. Those numbers are solid, but it's what those lefties have done when they've put the ball in play -- 22.7% hard-hit rate, 16.5% fly-ball rate and 70.3% ground-ball rate -- that really makes Conforto a scary play tonight. Look at that friggin' ground-ball rate -- my goodness.
With Conforto priced as one of the 10-most expensive outfielders, he isn't worth the risk tonight if he's in the lineup (which he has been of late against southpaws).
