After homering on Opening Day, Freddie Freeman may seem like a guy to roll with again Friday, especially against a right-handed pitcher with a 6.02 ERA last year. But before rushing out to put him in all your lineups, here's why you should exercise some caution.
For starters, Nick Pivetta is not as poor a pitcher as his ERA indicates. He pitched to a 4.32 SIERA last year, which isn't bad, and he struck out a solid 24.0% of the batters he faced.
Despite pitching right-handed, Pivetta is far more successful against left-handed batters than right-handed hitters. Pivetta struck out 25.2% of lefties faced last year and held them to a 29.0% hard-hit rate. Against righties, though, his strikeout rate dipped to 22.7% and he surrendered an astounding 41.5% hard-hit rate.
Freeman could still have a great performance, but this isn't the pristine matchup it may appear to be at first glance.
