On the other side of the Yankees-Red Sox matchup is Mookie Betts. Betts has had a strong start to the season, recording a .364 batting average and a 50.0% hard-hit rate as he has walked more than he has struck out so far. While he doesn't have any significant platoon splits, Luis Severino poses a tough enough matchup that Betts is an avoid for Tuesday.
Severino had a breakout season in 2017, and he has proved that it was no fluke thus far in 2018, pitching to the tune of a 2.17 SIERA. Right-handed bats last season against Severino didn't fare much better than left-handed sticks did against Chris Sale.
In 2017, right-handed batters posted a .243 wOBA against Severino. They had a 29.7% strikeout-rate, 29.3% fly-ball rate, and 24.9% hard-hit rate. These numbers aren't quite identical to those that left-handed batters posted against Sale, but they are numbers we shouldn't be looking to attack.
Betts is one of baseball's best players, but use him at your own risk Tuesday.
