Today's main slate is a fairly short six games, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are the second-biggest favorites in action (-176 moneyline). Their opponent, the Oakland Athletics, also have the slate's lowest implied total at 3.26 runs.
So far, the A's bats have been awful against left-handed pitching in 2018, ranking 29th in wRC+ (65) and striking out at a top-12 rate (25.4%). This is a team that doesn't look much different than its 2017 iteration, which also finished bottom-10 in wRC+ while striking out at a top-5 rate against lefties.
Alex Wood has been stellar to start the season, allowing only three runs and no walks over 14 innings. His pitch velocity is down a little bit from where it was in 2017, but he's still boasting a strong 11.2% swinging-strike rate.
Going back to last year (providing us with a bigger sample), Wood's 3.57 skill-interactive ERA (SIERA) ranked 14th among the 75 pitchers with at least 150 innings pitched. Meanwhile, he posted a 24.6% strikeout rate and 11.7% swinging-strike rate that made him a strong fantasy producer in the whiff department.
Bringing those numbers into such a favorable matchup, it's no surprise that numberFire's models project him as the top-scoring fantasy pitcher on Wednesday's main slate.
