Denard Span has opened 2018 with a .350 wOBA, which is on pace to be his best since 2009. His 33.3% hard-hit rate and 36.0% fly-ball rate are also both on pace to be career-high marks.
Including the 2017 season, to increase our sample size to 483 plate appearances against right-handed pitching, Span has tallied a serviceable .344 wOBA and .180 ISO. Those numbers aren't jaw-dropping by any stretch, but they are enough to create some appeal on a small slate, even when he draws a tough matchup against Dylan Bundy.
Bundy has been stellar to open 2018, not allowing much hard contact while also fanning batters at a very high rate. Our 2018 sample size on Bundy does still sit at only five games, though, and the 71 left-handed bats he has faced have tagged him for a .360 wOBA and 4.49 xFIP. That comes after allowing a 5.49 xFIP to left-handers last year, and it leaves plenty of room for optimism for Span.
