Cleveland right-hander Josh Tomlin has had an egregious start to 2018, and that's not likely to fare well against the high-powered Yankees offense.
He had been unexciting, but fine over his last two Major League seasons, with a 4.24 SIERA in 2016 and a 4.17 in 2017, but over five starts this year that mark has skyrocketed to a 5.67. His velocity has fallen in each of his last two seasons, and is down almost 3% from where it was in 2016. This has likely played a role in his getting walloped for a 45.6% hard-hit and 49.4% fly-ball rate.
Aaron Judge is not somebody you can afford to give up hard fly-balls to. Since the start of the 2017 season, he has destroyed right-handed pitching for a 44.0% hard-hit rate, 41.6% fly-ball rate and 13.6% soft-hit rate, which has translated to a .436 wOBA and .342 isolated slugging (ISO). If you're paying up for a bat, he might be your best option.
