Christian Villanueva has been on fire in April, but curiously enough he has done almost all of his damage in his career against southpaws. He has a career 321 wRC+ against southpaws compared to just a 111 wRC+ against right-handed pitching. This is due largely to his splits in terms of hard-hit rate, which is 46.9% against left-handed pitchers compared to 26.0% against right-handers.
Now, because Villanueva hasn't had many big league plate appearances in his career, his stats are still in a very small sample so take it with a grain of salt. But it is clear that Villanueva is a guy to target against southpaws and, more or less, avoid against right-handed hurlers.
On Friday, he has to deal with a very tough right-hander in the Los Angeles Dodgers' Kenta Maeda. Maeda has held right-handed batters to a career .269 wOBA, including a 30.6% strikeout rate. Against such a filthy right-handed pitcher, Villanueva isn't worth the lofty price tag.
