Teoscar Hernandez has been a pleasant surprise for the Toronto Blue Jays so far in 2018 -- he's been batting primarily second this season, and he's slugged his way to a .290 ISO, .363 wOBA, and 5 home runs this season. For a guy with only 207 major league plate appearances before this year, he's been a major boost to the lineup.
Hernandez could be in for a long night on Tuesday, though, thanks to a matchup with James Paxton. Over 38 2/3 innings pitched in 2018, Paxton has been brilliant, with a 35.7% strikeout rate and 3.10 expected fielding independent pitching (xFIP).
The southpaw may be at his nastiest against right-handed batters so far this year, as they've hit him for only a .247 wOBA with a 38.8% strikeout rate. In the last two seasons, Hernandez hasn't been at his best against lefties either. In a sample size of just 58 plate appearances since the start of the 2017 season, he's struggled to the tune of a .289 wOBA and 37.9% strikeout rate against them.
