This one may feel crazy. You want to avoid Sean Manaea when he is facing the same team that he no-hit just a couple weeks ago? The same Boston Red Sox that have a 77 wRC+, third-worst in baseball, against southpaws?
It's not as simple as that, however. Getting the Red Sox in Oakland, in one of the best parks for pitching, is far different than pitching against them at Fenway, one of the best stadiums for offense.
Manaea hasn't pitched as well as his 2.11 ERA would indicate, either. That's not to say he's bad, but a 21.7% strikeout rate and 35.1% hard-hit rate allowed aren't the hallmarks of ace pitchers. He isn't walking anybody, but his SIERA is still 3.68, well above his ERA.
Moreover, even though the Red Sox have struggled so far against southpaws, it's still a relatively small sample. And with guys like Mookie Betts, J.D. Martinez, Hanley Ramirez, Xander Bogaerts, and Eduardo Nunez -- all of whom bat from the right side of the plate -- it's tough to feel good about this matchup for Manaea.
