Tyler Skaggs has shown some serious improvement to start the 2018 season. His velocity is consistent with where it has been in previous years, but he's showing a lot more variety in his pitches, relying less on his fastball.
This has led to a big jump in his swinging-strike rate -- from 8.1% in 2017 to a career-best 10.4% this season. That leap also has him sporting a career-best 25.0% strikeout rate, and his 3.54 skill-interactive ERA (SIERA) is on pace to be a career-best, as well.
His matchup today isn't an overly easy one as the Tampa Bay Rays do hit southpaws well, but the Rays also strike out against lefties at an above-average rate.
Today's slate also doesn't offer many good matchups for pitchers in general, and Tampa's 3.37 implied total is Thursday's lowest.
