Matt Joyce has had a weak start to 2018, but his 32.1% hard-hit and 45.3% fly-ball rates against right-handed pitching reveal plenty of room for optimism. Those marks are right in line with the 31.3% hard-hit rate and 45.5% fly-ball rates that translated to a .360 wOBA and .256 ISO in 2017.
Those marks are especially encouraging tonight, when the righty he takes on is the struggling Ian Kennedy.
Kennedy has a 4.33 SIERA to open the 2018 season, and even though that's an improvement from his 4.88 last year, it's still fairly weak. And, to make matters worse, he's allowing a .345 wOBA on a 40.5% hard-hit and 42.9% fly-ball rate this year, creating an especially appealing spot for Joyce.
Hitting atop the order, he is inside our projections' top five values on the night.
