Even if we expand our view to include every game -- day and night -- on Thursday, the Boston Red Sox sit at the top of the pack with a 5.30 implied total.
Part of that high number comes from the fact that the Detroit Tigers will be starting southpaw Matt Boyd. Boyd has struggled to the tune of a 4.82 SIERA this season (not much better than his 4.94 from 2017), and while that hasn't been reflected in his ERA (3.23), we can expect that to start climbing quickly.
He has a particularly poor 5.31 xFIP against right-handed bats, and that's likely to spell trouble against J.D. Martinez.
Martinez has been an absolute monster from the dish this year, sporting a .427 wOBA and .335 isolated slugging (ISO) over 251 plate appearances. Those numbers are right in line with the damage he did in 2017 as well, and over those two seasons he has absolutely destroyed southpaws (55.0% hard-hit and 10.0% soft-hit rate). That contact has translated to a .466 wOBA and .376 ISO over 160 plate appearances.
