Michael Conforto has been nowhere near as productive to start 2018 as he was last season, but there's still some room for optimism tonight.
He still boasts excellent numbers against right-handed pitching over the course of his young Major League career, having turned a 39.3% hard-hit rate and 41.3% fly-ball rate into a .371 wOBA and .240 isolated slugging (ISO). He also has a career average .306 batting average on balls in play (BABIP) against righties, meaning that he has been on the wrong side of variance a bit this year, with only a .277 BABIP in the split.
Conforto finds himself in a great matchup as he's taking on Arizona Diamondbacks righty Matt Koch. Koch posted a 4.77 skill-interactive ERA (SIERA) in his first season in the Majors in 2016, and then an ugly 4.38 xFIP in 10 Triple-A starts last year. He has opened 2018 with a 4.84 SIERA, and his career 40.4% hard-hit rate allowed to left-handed bats gives Conforto no shortage of upside.
