It's pretty impressive that in his age-35 season, Russell Martin has logged a bunch of innings as a catcher, but he has also started games for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2018 at shortstop, third base, and left field. The dude already owns a lengthy, impressive career, and that type of versatility is hard to find.
Despite those Swiss Army knife-like capabilities, Martin faces lefty Tyler Skaggs, and he's really struggled in that split. Over the last calendar year, Martin owns a paltry .244 wOBA, 25.0% fly-ball rate, and 30.2% hard-hit rate versus southpaws.
A cheap catching option could be attractive as a salary-saving punt, but Martin doesn't look like a solid play tonight.
