Steven Wright has been a revelation for the Boston Red Sox, pitching 36.2 innings with a stellar 1.23 ERA as he fills in for the injured Drew Pomeranz. Nevertheless, there are quite a few things working against Wright in his Friday start against the Seattle Mariners.
Even though Wright's ERA is low, you could actually argue he has pitched quite poorly this year. Batters are striking out just 20.2% of the time against him, but he has walked 12.6% of the batters he has faced this year. Wright's 4.54 SIERA paints the picture of a pitcher who has gotten lucky this year, not one who has dazzled hitters.
The Mariners are also top-10 in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching (20.8%), and most notably have seen Wright recently. In fact, Wright's last start came on the road in Seattle, and he will now have to face them in the third-most hitter-friendly ballpark in baseball. Facing a lineup twice in a short span is bad news for any pitcher, but it is especially discouraging when that pitcher primarily throws one pitch, the knuckleball.
