Among starting pitchers in action today, nobody has allowed a higher hard-hit rate this season than the 45.2% clip from Texas Rangers righty Austin Bibens-Dirkx.
He has opened 2018 with a 4.53 skill-interactive ERA (SIERA) through three starts, and while that is a small sample, his 5.20 SIERA in his 2017 rookie campaign doesn't inspire much confidence that he'll get much better than this. He also struggled to the tune of a 4.54 xFIP over 11 Triple-A starts this season, and with that in mind, it wouldn't be surprising to see his Major League numbers get even worse as we move forward.
Eric Hosmer has done strong work against right-handed pitching this season, turning a 39.5% hard-hit rate into a .363 wOBA and .183 ISO. He's no stranger to producing against righties, either, having notched a .400 wOBA in 463 plate appearances in the split last year, and he should have no issues taking advantage of tonight's matchup.
