Joey Gallo's 35.7% strikeout rate and sub-.200 batting average leave him with a low floor on any given night, but his power gives him a ton of upside, as well. He has a .267 isolated slugging (ISO) on the year, and his numbers get even better if we look at how he hits against right-handers.
Among the 366 hitters with at least 50 batted-balls against righties this year, Gallo ranks seventh in average exit velocity and fourth in average batted-ball distance. That comes from a ridiculous 48.2% hard-hit rate, 9.9% soft-hit rate and 51.8% fly-ball rate.
He brings that into a sweet matchup tonight against right-hander Frankie Montas of the Oakland Athletics. Montas has an ugly 4.87 skill-interactive ERA over eight MLB games this year, and with a 4.51 SIERA in 23 games last year and a 4.58 xFIP over his 10 Triple-A starts in 2018, it's no surprise that he's struggling so much.
Left-handed bats have crushed him for a 48.2% hard-hit rate this season, and Gallo should have no issue making some tremendous contact in this one.
