As with Rodriguez, the other shoe may be coming for Frankie Montas, who has surrendered 49.1% hard contact in 53.1 frames this season, yet still managed to hold down the fort with a respectable 3.54 ERA.
Will the righty's 5.8% homer-per-fly rate inevitably balloon? Perhaps. Then again, the Oakland Athletics hurler has cut his fly ball rate significantly this season, though the samples are perhaps too small to draw conclusions in either direction.
What we do know is that this week Montas draws a Tigers team that has struggled with righties all year, managing a .135 group ISO and a 15.4% strikeout-minus-walk rate on the season. Whether or not Montas' power suppression has been skill or mere chance, he'll have a strong matchup and an accommodating home ballpark on his side in Week 18.
