Even on a slate featuring Clayton Kershaw, New York Yankees righty Luis Severino is numberFire's top-projected arm on the main slate.
Oddsmakers seem to be in agreement with this idea, as the Chicago White Sox have one of the day's lowest implied totals (3.34), while the Yankees are the biggest favorites (-254 moneyline) on the board.
This terrific matchup with the White Sox goes a long way to help Severino's case tonight. If we just look at active rosters (helping to remove the effects of traded or injured players), the White Sox have a middling 96 wRC+ against right-handed pitching, and their 25.8% strikeout rate is the highest in the Majors.
Severino has no issues fanning opposing hitters, with a 27.6% strikeout rate and 12.0% swinging-strike rate (both better than Kershaw's), and he backs that upside with a solid 3.35 skill-interactive ERA (SIERA).
He has been a bit shaky lately, but his last four games include matchups with both the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians (both rank top four in wRC+ against righties). He should bounce back in a big way in this spot.
