Hess has been egregious through 12 Major League starts, posting a 6.41 ERA with a similarly awful 5.48 SIERA. He has been particularly awful against left-handed bats, getting crushed for a .376 wOBA by 119 batters.

Joey Wendle doesn't offer anything special from the dish, but he's got a capable .330 wOBA on a 35.8% hard-hit rate against righties this year, and that is more than enough to put him in play against Hess.
