After getting off to a terrible start over the first couple months of the season, Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is back, and is once again a serious candidate for NL MVP. His .399 wOBA is eighth-best in baseball among qualified hitters and his 151 wRC+ ranks seventh. He's also been incredibly hot since the All-Star break, with a .427 wOBA and a 170 wRC+.
Goldschmidt would be a great option on a normal night, but he's especially appealing on tonight's slate, as he's facing the Los Angeles Angels' Odrisamer Despaigne, who has spent most of the season in Triple-A and has logged just 24 1/3 innings in 2018. His 6.29 ERA is far higher than his 4.16 SIERA, but both are among the worst of any starter taking the bump this evening, hence the Diamondbacks' robust 4.87 implied total.
Goldschmidt should rake against the soft-tossing right-hander, who has a career strikeout percentage of 14.0% in 335 MLB innings. Despaigne doesn't miss many bats, and Goldschmidt should have plenty of pitches with which to rake.
