The 2018 season has represented a major step back for the Kansas City Royals, and that includes starter Jake Junis. Over 23 turns in the rotation, Junis owns a 4.76 ERA, largely due to a 3.8% jump in his hard-hit rate, which stands at 40.5%.
Despite facing a Tampa Bay Rays offense that has struggled mightily over the last two weeks (.297 weighted on-base average, wOBA), Junis will have to improve against same-sided bats. Righties have tagged him for 1.90 home runs per nine innings pitched (HR/9) in 2018, in large part due to a high 39.0% fly-ball rate.
While a poor opposing offense can make a pitcher an intriguing option, Junis' poor form keeps us from going that route tonight.
