Top-end pitching tonight really comes down to Justin Verlander or J.A. Happ, and while both are dealing with fairly tough matchups, Happ gets the edge.
His numbers aren't quite as deadly as Verlander's, but he's still sporting an excellent 3.55 skill-interactive ERA (SIERA) with a 27.2% strikeout rate on the year. He has at least 8 strikeouts in three of his last four starts and has topped 40 FanDuel points in each of those four.
The Detroit Tigers don't strike out a ton against southpaws (20.4%, looking just at their active roster), but they sit below average with a 94 wRC+ in the split. Verlander will be dealing with an Angels squad that boasts a 115 wRC+ against righties, making his spot much tougher.
The Tigers' 3.38 implied total is Thursday's second-lowest mark, and with a -300 moneyline, the New York Yankees are the day's biggest favorites.
With top-end strikeout upside and the best chance of scoring a win on the slate, Happ's floor and ceiling put him slightly ahead of Verlander tonight.
