The Toronto Blue Jays weren't exactly an offensive powerhouse on opening day, but their 4.42 implied total is Friday's highest as they get another crack at the Detroit Tigers, who will be rolling with left-hander Matt Boyd on the mound.
After posting a career-worst 4.94 skill-interactive ERA (SIERA) in 2017, Boyd did improve in 2018, but still only notched an underwhelming 4.31. That also came with the highest hard-hit rate (37.5%) and highest fly-ball rate (49.9%) of his career. Right-handed bats gave him fits, cracking him for a 4.98 xFIP.
Brandon Drury, like I wrote about yesterday, is an exciting play more for his price and situation than for anything he brings to the table himself.
Batting leadoff for the Jays, he's in a prime position to benefit with as many plate appearances as possible, upping the potential for runs and RBI -- especially when they're expected to score the most runs on the slate.
With a 30.8% hard-hit rate and 10.8% soft-hit rate against southpaws since the start of the 2017 season (172 plate appearances), he makes solid enough contact to be able to benefit from this matchup against Boyd as well.
