Getting the honor of being the first player featured twice in this article in 2019, Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels get a great matchup today against the Oakland Athletics and righty Marco Estrada.
Estrada turned in a 5.45 SIERA in 2018, which is the worst among today's starting pitchers by a huge margin. That came with a 16.4% strikeout rate (his worst since 2008), and is part of what has been a clear trend of decline in his numbers. He had last posted a then career-worst SIERA (4.69) in 2017, and his next-worst mark (4.64) came in 2015. After four down years, there's not a ton of room for hope that he suddenly turns things around.
Trout is as dangerous as they come, platoon splits be damned. His career-best .447 wOBA in 2018 came with a terrific .316 isolated power (ISO), and that was after a 2017 season that saw him post similarly stellar stats (.437 wOBA, .323 ISO).
He was even hitting the ball better in righty-versus-righty matchups last year, turning a 46.2% hard-hit rate and 46.9% fly-ball rate into a .457 wOBA and .338 ISO. Again, that wasn't a new trend, either, coming after a 2017 campaign in which he notched a .450 wOBA and .359 against right-handed arms.
