Picking on Marco Estrada proved highly profitable last season, and early indications are it's going to be more of the same in 2019. He had set a career-worst in skill-interactive ERA (SIERA) in 2017 with a 4.69, and in 2018 he did far worse, with a 5.45. His strikeout rate fell to 16.4% (the second-lowest of his career), and he allowed a whopping 55.6% fly-ball rate.
He's only allowed three runs through 11 innings so far this season, but that 2.45 ERA comes with an egregious 7.20 SIERA and only a 9.3% strikeout rate, while his fly-ball rate sits at 75.0%. It looks like it's going to be more of the same for the righty as an Oakland A.
J.D. Martinez is really not a guy you want to give up a bunch of fly-balls too either. He's posted a hard-hit rate of at least 40.0% in each of the last five seasons, and he hasn't posted a home run-to-fly-ball rate below 18.0% since 2013 -- topping 20.0% in three of his last four seasons.
Righty-versus-righty matchups don't really slow him down either, and he clobbered right-handers for 45.2% hard-hit rate with only a 10.0% soft-hit rate in 2018.
