Tyler Flowers is coming off a down year from the dish, but even with only a .315 wOBA in 2018 he still looked great in his small 88 plate appearance sample against southpaws, posting a .477 wOBA and .258 ISO. That did come with a .429 batting average on balls in play (BABIP), so we can expect some serious regression, but he did post a 46.8% hard-hit rate with only a 4.3% soft-hit rate in that split.
To get a bigger sample we can go back and include a couple more seasons. Since the start of the 2016 campaign he has 266 plate appearances against lefties, and in that split he still has an outstanding wOBA of .392, which comes on a 38.7% hard-hit rate.
He's set to get his first crack at a lefty of 2019 tonight, taking on Jon Lester and the Chicago Cubs.
The 35-year-old Lester is coming off a 2018 season that saw him struggle to the tune of a career-worst 4.57 skill-interactive ERA (SIERA), which indicates that he wasn't pitching nearly as well as his 3.32 ERA might have you believe. The 31.9% hard-hit rate he allowed was his highest since 2007, as was his 36.4% fly-ball rate.
