Early 2019 returns find Anibal Sanchez seemingly taking a step back from his resurgent 2018 campaign, which saw the veteran posting his best results since his salad days with the Detroit Tigers.
It does seem unfair to knock Sanchez for sputtering out of the gate (4.86 ERA, 1.50 WHIP in 16.2 innings pitched) when two of his first three starts came against a tough, patient Phillies squad. It's not as if Sanchez has given up a ton of quality contact, and one has to think his 9.5% walk rate will regress to his favor. The righty hasn't managed a walk rate over 8% across a full campaign in nine years.
Look for Sanchez to break out of his early funk against a perennially power-starved Marlins offense in a park that is notoriously hostile to the home run ball, providing some nice plug-and-play appeal for fantasy owners in a pinch.
