The Tampa Bay Rays' offense is in a great spot tonight with the Baltimore Orioles set to roll out righty David Hess on the mound.
Hess struggled to the tune of a 5.08 skill-interactive ERA (SIERA) over 21 games as a rookie last year, and while his ERA is much improved to open 2019, that comes with a nearly-identical 5.04 SIERA. That gives him a 5.06 mark for his career.
Ji-Man Choi is more than capable of taking advantage of a soft matchup with a righty. The sample isn't huge, but in 390 career plate appearances in the split he's turned a 38.7% hard-hit rate and 12.4% soft-hit rate into a solid .344 wOBA and a .219 ISO.
