On the second half of today's doubleheader, the Boston Red Sox will be up against Spencer Turnbull and the Detroit Tigers.
Turnbull has looked good through his eight career major league games, but we still don't really have a reliable sample on him at any sort of a high level -- he also pitched only two Triple-A games last year.
The most recent sample of any significant size we get is his 19 Double-A starts in 2018, and while his 3.45 xFIP in those games was solid, that's also not an especially intimidating mark when you consider the level of competition. The Red Sox are also one of the toughest matchups he could ask for, with an active roster that posted a league-leading 124 wRC+ against right-handed pitching last year.
Rafael Devers has shown some pop with a .320 wOBA and .182 ISO over his first three seasons in the majors, and just looking at his splits against right-handed pitching (607 plate appearances) we see that ISO climb to .199 on a 35.2% hard-hit and 37.6% fly-ball rate.
The Red Sox are another lineup that it's tough to get cheap exposure to, but rostering Devers with the platoon advantage is a great way to do that on Tuesday.
