Greg Holland has converted 12 saves in as many appearances, with 14 strikeouts in 11.1 innings since July 26th. Wade Davis pitched in each of the games, except one, and logged nine holds over that time. Davis was lights out, with 17 strikeouts over the course of 10.2 innings, and didn’t let up an earned run in that time frame. In fact, he hasn’t allowed and run since June 25. Since then, Davis has thrown in 21 games, where he has struck out 29 hitters over 20.2 innings and walked five batters. Davis is putting up Koji Uehara-type numbers from last season, and has to be the hottest reliever in the game.
Over his last 21 games, Holland has been in great form as well. Through his 20.1 innings of work, he’s struck out 28 over 20.1 innings and has a 1.77 ERA. Although one of his two blown saves this season came in that time frame, Holland converted his 16 other save opportunities to put him atop the league with 38 saves.
This combination has finished off 11 of the Royals’ 19 wins this month, and is a big part of why they are first in the AL Central.
