C.J. Cron checks all of the boxes we look for in a value play. He's hitting in a quality spot in the order, he's facing a mediocre starter in the Texas Rangers' Martin Perez, and the park factor in Texas is sweet. Adding in that he'll likely come with low ownership only makes him more fun.
The Los Angeles Angels are likely to be a popular stack today, but most people stacking them will likely choose Albert Pujols following his two-run dinger yesterday. Because of position eligibility, if they use Pujols, they won't be able to use Cron. Even those who recognize Cron's viability may have gotten burned by his 0-for-4 performance yesterday in a similarly good spot. There's just a lot to like here with Cron.
Perez has a 5.08 SIERA up this year with frightening strikeout and walk rates that should easily populate the bases. Cron will likely slide back down to fifth in the order with Kole Calhoun returning, but even there he should see plenty of chances to drive in runs. Pujols is the safer choice, but Cron is the one who appears to be the stronger option in tournaments.
