Jarrod Saltalamacchia is a switch-hitter, and over his career has shown to be much more comfortable as a lefty against right-handed pitching, with a .336 wOBA and .198 isolated slugging. He's making great contact this year, with a strong 38.5 percent hard-hit rate and only a 6.2 percent soft-hit rate, while managing an absurd 60.0 percent fly-ball rate, culminating in a .225 isolated slugging that is on pace to be the second-best of his career.
There's some room for concern with how often Saltalamacchia is striking out, but his matchup tonight with Josh Tomlin helps to minimize that, as Tomlin has only a 15.0 percent strikeout rate against lefties over his career and a 14.6 on the season. Tomlin's 4.24 SIERA is his highest since the 2012 season (excluding 2013, when he pitched only two innings), and he makes for a very appealing matchup for Saltalamacchia tonight.
