Yan Gomes isn't playing as poorly this season as it may look on the surface. He's not producing well from the plate, but he's also only managing an unsustainably low .203 BABIP despite a 27.3% hard-hit and 16.8% soft-hit rate that, while not elite, shouldn't lead to a BABIP that low.
Even in the midst of this rough season, he is actually hitting left-handed pitching quite well, owning a .310/.339/.517 slash, .360 wOBA and .207 ISO against southpaws.
He draws a matchup against lefty J.A. Happ, who is in a similar place with his traditional numbers not being indicative of how he's actually played -- only he's on the opposite end of the spectrum.
Happ has a decent 3.70 ERA on the year, but his 4.71 SIERA and 16.9% strikeout rate are career worsts. Over his career, Happ has allowed a .328 wOBA and pitched to a 4.43 xFIP against right-handed hitters, and he makes for a great matchup for Gomes today.
