Stacking can be a controversial topic in many daily fantasy sports, but you can count baseball as a glaring exception. Here, it's universal.
Using multiple players on the same team on a given day presents you with the opportunity to double dip. If one of your players hits an RBI double, there's a good chance he drove in another one of your guys. When you get the points for both the run and the RBI, you'll be climbing the leaderboards fast.
Each day here on numberFire, we'll go through four offenses ripe for the stacking. They could have a great matchup, be in a great park, or just have a lot of quality sticks in the lineup, but these are the offenses primed for big days that you may want a piece of.
Premium members can use our new stacking feature to customize their stacks within their optimal lineups for the day, choosing the team you want to stack and how many players you want to include. You can also check out our hitting heat map, which provides an illustration of which offenses have the best combination of matchup and potency.
Now, let's get to the stacks.
Boston Red Sox
Following the Colorado Rockies -- who we'll get to later -- the Boston Red Sox have the next highest implied team total on the board at 6.04 against Julio Teheran. That may seem rather high against a decent pitcher like Teheran, but he has a modest 4.63 SIERA this season, and we're looking at some great hitting weather at Fenway with temperatures in the 80s and the wind blowing out to right-center. If you're looking to fade Colorado, this is one of your best pivots.
What makes this a slightly tricky matchup, though, is that Teheran is well-known for struggling against lefties, and yet the top Sox bats like Mookie Betts ($5,400), J.D. Martinez ($4,700), and Xander Bogaerts ($4,100) are all right-handed. Still, dating back to last year, Teheran hasn't been completely dominant against righties, either, with a beatable 4.27 FIP and 20.9% strikeout rate along with a 41.6% ground-ball rate.
It's not perfect, but under these hitting conditions, we know these guys are capable of doing plenty of damage. Betts and Martinez continue to be top five among qualified hitters in wOBA while Bogaerts has demonstrated a major power boost this year with a .233 isolated power (ISO).
Getting back to those lefty struggles, over his career, Teheran has posted a 16.9% strikeout rate, 9.5% walk rate, and .341 wOBA allowed against them, so we'll definitely want to take advantage. The Red Sox made surprising headlines this morning by designating Hanley Ramirez for assignment, so Mitch Moreland ($3,500) ought to be at first base tonight. Moreland holds a solid 38.9% hard-hit rate and .234 ISO against right-handers during his Boston tenure.
Andrew Benintendi ($4,200) is always worth a look out of the two-hole, and Rafael Devers ($3,600) will also have the platoon advantage.
