There are some nights when only a handful of matchups have high implied totals, or one stack in particular stands out above all others. This is decidedly not one of those slates, as over half of tonight's 30 teams have implied totals above 4.70 and a whopping seven hit 5.70 or better. It might not be a bad strategy to cast a wide net of lineups, and ownership ought to be far more spread out than yesterday.
Each day here on numberFire, we'll go through four offenses ripe for the stacking. They could have a great matchup, be in a great park, or just have a lot of quality sticks in the lineup, but these are the offenses primed for big days that you may want a piece of.
Premium members can use our stacking feature to customize their stacks within their optimal lineups for the day, choosing the team you want to stack and how many players you want to include. You can also check out our hitting heat map, which provides an illustration of which offenses have the best combination of matchup and potency.
Now, let's get to the stacks.
San Diego Padres
In addition to the boatload of offense at our disposal tonight, we also have Max Scherzer ($12,200) and Gerrit Cole ($11,500) in play, and their high price tags will be tough to pair with many of the evening's top spots.
However, the San Diego Padres will allow you to have your cake and eat it too, as they not only have a fantastic 5.96 implied total, but most of their bats are priced at $3,100 and below. Only Fernando Tatis Jr. ($3,800) and Manny Machado ($3,900) exceed that threshold, leaving us with affordable choices like Eric Hosmer ($3,100), Hunter Renfroe ($3,000), Franmil Reyes ($2,800), and Josh Naylor ($2,500). This group isn't short on pop, either, with the active roster combining for a solid .191 ISO on the season, and they'll enjoy a park factor boost in hitter-friendly Camden Yards.
And that leads us to the reason for the high implied total: the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles are typically easy pickings due to their already weak starting rotation, but we're skipping straight to their beleaguered bullpen tonight, with Jimmy Yacabonis (5.35 SIERA and 16.2% strikeout rate) serving as an opener before likely handing off to southpaw Josh Rogers (6.69 SIERA and 8.9% strikeout rate).
But regardless of who they're throwing out there, Baltimore's bullpen is about as bad as it gets. Among active rosters, it ranks dead last in SIERA (4.58), xFIP (5.01), and strikeout rate (20.9%), all while allowing the most home runs per nine innings (1.98). This one could get ugly real quick.
For another affordable stack to use with those pricey hurlers, the Cleveland Indians (5.73 implied total) also check in with a favorable matchup against Glenn Sparkman, with most of the lineup coming in at $3,200 and under, including the super cheap Bobby Bradley ($2,200).
