3 Daily Fantasy Baseball Stacks for Wednesday 5/25/22

Stacks are an integral part of daily fantasy baseball. They can push a team to the top of a GPP by driving upside. However, they're also viable in cash games, namely smaller (two-person or three-person) stacks that mitigate the volatility of a full four-person stack.

This article is your home throughout the 2022 Major League Baseball season for the day's top stacks. The primary goal is to identify the highest-scoring upside stack. Still, game theory will play a role in contrarian stacks making the cut as GPP options. Nevertheless, chalky stacks will make appearances in this space, too.

Beyond my analysis in this space, I strongly suggest numberFire premium members using our DFS Sharpstack tool and hitting heat map tool. The DFS Sharpstack helps plug stacks into optimized lineups, allowing you to change parameters and lock or exclude players and teams. Meanwhile, the heat map offers a one-stop-shop for the opposing starting pitcher, implied total, park factor, and other notable goodies.

Now, let's look at the top stacks on today's main slate that starts on FanDuel at 6:40 pm ET.

Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves are a power-chasing stack tonight. Their active roster has a track record of hitting for top-shelf pop against southpaws. Additionally, Ranger Suarez does a below-average job striking out batters and generating empty swings.

According to FanGraphs, the league averages for strikeout rate and swinging-strike rate for pitchers in 2022 have been 22.5 percent and 8.2 percent. Meanwhile, Suarez has had a 19.0 percent strikeout rate and 8.2 percent swinging-strike rate. Thus, his pitching profile is risky against Atlanta's power.

Specifically, six players on Atlanta's active roster have had a .235 Isolated Power (ISO) or higher against lefties since 2019, and two more hitters have reached at least a .208 ISO. Ronald Acuna ($4,200) and Ozzie Albies ($3,100) are excellent options for this stack.

However, don't sleep on William Contreras ($2,100) if he's in the lineup. The 24-year-old backstop who moonlights as an outfielder has had a .209 ISO against lefties in his young career.

Houston Astros

The Houston Astros are back after appearing here yesterday. Thankfully, they justified their inclusion by hanging seven runs on the Cleveland Guardians. Tonight, they face another righty who doesn't strike many batters out.

This year, Cal Quantrill has had a 15.1 percent strikeout rate and a 7.3 percent swinging-strike rate in 41 and 1/3 innings. However, like last year, he's been quite lucky. As a result, Quantrill's 3.48 ERA in 2022 is significantly lower than his 4.48 Expected ERA (xERA) and 4.95 Skill-Interactive ERA (SIERA).

Quantrill also beat his ERA estimators by a wide margin last year. So, maybe he'll be an outlier. However, the sample has been too small to rush to that conclusion. So instead, it's better to bet on his good luck running out.

Thus, queuing up an Astros stack tonight is incredibly enticing. Moreover, they're stackable from top to bottom with players such as Jose Altuve ($4,200), Michael Brantley ($3,200), Alex Bregman ($3,500), Yordan Alvarez ($3,800), Kyle Tucker ($3,600), and Jeremy Pena ($3,600).

Los Angeles Angels

Tonight, the Los Angeles Angels join their American League West rivals as a desirable stack. Their top-heavy lineup has a mouthwatering matchup with Glenn Otto.

The 26-year-old righty has been tattooed for a 7.36 ERA, 4.40 SIERA, 1.48 WHIP, and 1.13 homers per nine innings in his first 47 and 2/3 innings in The Show. Additionally, he's been destroyed by lefties and righties.

Left-handed batters have rocked him for a .492 slugging and .404 Weighted On-Base Average (wOBA). Meanwhile, righties have touched him up for a .342 wOBA. Thus, the Angels' top lefties and righties are excellent selections.

Mike Trout ($4,400) is the shoo-in top option. Since 2019, he's had a .427 OBP, .375 ISO, and 189 Weighted Runs Created Plus (wRC+) in 808 plate appearances against righties. Reigning American League MVP Shohei Ohtani ($3,900) and Jared Walsh ($3,400) are also top stacking options.
