Tampa Bay Rays reliever Brad Boxberger (abdomen) allowed two hits and a walk while recording two outs Thursday afternoon in an appearance at extended spring training.
Both of the outs were strikeouts, and the most important thing is he felt discomfort-free. Boxberger should be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment sometime this weekend. Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash did confirm three days ago that Boxberger will take over immediately at closer, pushing Alex Colome into a setup role.
Boxberger has been excellent early on in his career, posting a 2.80 SIERA and 32.1 percent strikeout percentage. We project him to record 25 saves with a 24.1 strikeout percentage over the remainder of the season.
