New York Mets starting pitcher Justin Verlander will be placed on the 15-day injured list with a low grade teres major strain.
Verlander was scheduled to start the Mets' third game on Saturday versus the Miami Marlins. According to the club, Verlander will continue throwing at "moderate intensity" and be re-evaluated in a week. The 40-year-old right-hander signed a two-year, $86.67 million contract with the Mets over the winter. Tylor Megill will start on Saturday in place of Verlander.
Verlander recorded a spectacular 1.75 ERA and 0.83 WHIP, with 185 strikeouts and 29 walks, across 175 innings (28 starts) last year for the Houston Astros in his return from Tommy John surgery.
