The Arizona Diamondbacks designated starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner for assignment on Thursday.
The decision comes after Bumgarner allowed 7 runs on 7 hits in three innings versus the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. The Diamondbacks still owe Bumgarner $37 million through 2024, but his 10.26 ERA in four starts this season was apparently too much to bear. Tommy Henry is reportedly expected to replace Bumgarner in the Diamondbacks' rotation, but top prospect Brandon Pfaadt is another option.
MadBum allowed 20 runs (19 earned) with 10 strikeouts and 15 walks over 16 2/3 innings this season. He averaged just 5.8 FanDuel points in four starts with an 11.1% strikeout rate and a 16.7% walk rate.
