New York Mets pitcher Max Scherzer (neck) won't start on Friday against the Washington Nationals, per manager Buck Showalter.
Scherzer is dealing with neck spasms, but he might still be able to start at some point during the Mets' four-game series versus the Nationals. "Max threw out to 90 feet today," Showalter said, "He’s improving each day, so it’s a matter of ‘when.’ Want to get him up on the mound and make sure that’s okay." Joey Lucchesi or Tylor Megill will start on Friday instead.
Scherzer surrendered 6 runs on 8 hits and a walk over 3 1/3 innings, with 3 strikeouts, in his return from a 10-game suspension last week. The 38-year-old right-hander showed a dip in velocity and spin rate in that outing, and he's setting career-worsts across the board for the season.
