San Francisco Giants pitcher Johnny Cueto will start the 2016 All-Star Game for the National League.
Terry Collins, manager of the National League, announced this decision on Monday in San Diego, which is where the All-Star Game will take place on Tuesday night. Cueto threw a complete game in his most recent start -- Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies -- and owns a 2.47 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and a 115/24 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 131 1/3 innings pitched -- tops in baseball -- this year. He's certainly lived up to the $130 million contract he signed this winter as a free agent.
Cueto's 3.39 xFIP is almost a point higher than his ERA, but it's also the 11th best mark this season, and his 22.33 strikeout percentage is above the current league average (21.00 percent). His 2.99 nERD is fifth-best among pitchers. Our models project Cueto to record a 2.86 ERA and a 19.80 strikeout percentage over the remaining course of the season.
