Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Shane Bieber will undergo Tommy John surgery, the team announced Saturday morning.
Bieber's pitching elbow caused problems for him last season, which led to just 21 starts and 128.0 innings pitched. He saw a velocity resurgence over the offseason, but now, after experiencing pain after his first two starts of the season, he will have surgery to reconstruct his Ulnar Collateral Ligament. It's a brutal blow for both Bieber and the Guardians. When he returns from the injured list, Gavin Williams will likely assume Bieber's spot in the starting rotation.
In 2 starts this season, Bieber pitched 12 scoreless innings with 20 strikeouts and a walk.
