The true value of Eric Gordon lies in the hamstring of Chris Paul. Late in the Houston Rockets' win on Tuesday, Paul suffered a hamstring tweak and is considered questionable to play against the Detroit Pistons on Thursday night. With the Rockets four games clear of the Golden State Warriors out West, it would be surprising for them to gamble with the health of their star point guard this close to the playoffs.
If Paul sits, Gordon should step in as the team's secondary playmaker after James Harden. Gordon is averaging 30.4 FanDuel points per start and 29.4 when playing at least 30 minutes this season. At his price, all he needs is 23.5 to return value (5 points per $1,000 every in salary), so that alone tells us the kind of upside he has.
If that wasn't enough, per NBAWowy, Gordon's usage rate goes from 23.1% with Paul to 25.6% without him. In the 271 minutes and 554 possessions without either Paul or Harden on the floor, Gordon's used 38.9% of his team's offensive possessions while putting up a massive 1.30 FanDuel points per minute. So in the short stretches with Harden on the bench, Gordon should be the main man for Houston.
