Another player whose value relies on the health of a teammate is New York Knicks forward Mario Hezonja. Like VanVleet, Hezonja had been on the sidelines for an extended period of time prior to yesterday's game. Though for him, it was more a function of head coach David Fizdale fiddling with lineups rather an injury.
Regardless of the reason, he scored 17 points, grabbed 8 boards, and scored 35.1 FanDuel points in a spot start for Noah Vonleh yesterday, a player who has a chance to sit again with an ankle injury. If he does, then Hezonja is worth taking a chance on in tournaments.
Why tournaments instead of all types of contests? The answer relies in Fizdale, who has been all over the place in the minutes he's given Hezonja in starts. In fact, Hezonja has received 25-plus minutes of run just 4 times in 15 starts this season. He received fewer than 15 in four of those 15 games.
In the four games he did get 25-plus minutes of run, he scored 37.5, 19.5, 20.8, and 35.1 FanDuel points, respectively, which means he provided more than 5.0 points per $1,000 at tonight's price each time with much higher upside. We currently project him for just 18.6 minutes of run. If Vonleh is out again and Fizdale doesn't mess around too much, then expect that number to rocket and for Hezonja to be a lineup changer.
