Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin, along with forwards Willie Reed and Brice Johnson, has been traded to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for forward Tobias Harris, guard Avery Bradley, center Boban Marjanovic, a first and second round pick, as reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Talk about a blockbuster! By trading Griffin, the Clippers appear to be waving the white flag and starting their inevitable rebuild. The trade confirms DeAndre Jordan and Lou Williams are likely on the move before the trade deadline on February 9. In exchange for their superstar, who is in the first year of a 5-year/$173M contract, the Clips got a somewhat underwhelming package centered around a 25-year-old Harris, who was leading the Pistons with 18.1 points per game. Bradley is an expiring contract while Boban was likely added to make the dollars work. The first-round pick from Detroit is top-4 protected for the next 3 seasons.
Griffin has played in only 33 games this season due to injuries, averaging 22.6 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game while posting a 1.6 nERD rating, good for 70th out of 492 NBA players this season.
