College basketball season is upon us and we have a six-game slate tonight.
March Madness is months away, but you can get in all the college hoops hype by playing daily contests at FanDuel today. If you've played NBA DFS before, it's quite simple: pick a total of eight players -- four guards, three forwards and one utility spot you can use for either position. Stay within the $50,000 salary cap and field the team you think will score the most fantasy points.
Where scoring differs from NBA is in the blocks and steals categories, with each worth two FanDuel points apiece rather than the three you get in daily NBA contests.
Now that you're in the know, we can attack today's main slate, which locks at 7:00 p.m. EST and consists of six games.
Which players should you be targeting, and why?
Guards
Cole Anthony, North Carolina ($7,000) - The highly touted freshman dominated in his collegiate debut. In 37 minutes of action, the North Carolina Tar Heels' point guard scored 34 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, dished out four assists, and recorded one steal while turning the ball over four times. His 24 shot attempts were 17 more than any of his teammates. Anthony's price tag on FanDuel didn't change despite the huge performance. With an implied team total near 92, Anthony will likely be the highest-owned player on the slate.
Devon Dotson, Kansas ($6,100) - Dotson struggled in his highly anticipated matchup with Duke's Tre Jones. While Dotson scored 17 points, he also turned the ball over six times. The good news is that the sophomore logged 38 minutes in the season opener. Expect the budding star to bounce back tonight and prove that he's one of the best players in the country.
MaCio Teague, Baylor ($5,800) - Teague transferred from the UNC-Asheville and sat out last season. He led the Bulldogs in scoring as a sophomore (16.7 points per game). In 29 minutes of action on opening night as the Baylor Bears' shooting guard, Teague scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out three assists, and recorded one steal in Baylor's 105-61 win over the Central Arkansas Bears. The junior will play a big a role for Baylor this season.
Leaky Black, North Carolina ($4,900) - Wing depth is a concern for the Tar Heels with Brandon Robinson expected to miss a few weeks. Black is one of the Tar Heels' best defenders and has the ability to play multiple positions, which makes him indispensable to UNC. In 33 minutes of action, the sophomore scored five points, grabbed seven rebounds, and assisted on five baskets in the Tar Heels' opening-night win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Jamal Bey, Washington ($3,000) - The sophomore scored 20 points (team high), grabbed four rebounds, dished out four assists, and recorded five steals in 30 minutes in the Washington Huskies' lone exhibition game. While Bey doesn't start, he's one of the first players off the bench. With the Huskies losing 80 percent of their scoring from last year, Bey will be counted on to provide offense. He's the minimum on FanDuel tonight.
Forwards
Isaiah Stewart, Washington ($7,600) - The former McDonald's All American is expected to play a major role for the Huskies this season. In Washington's exhibition game, Stewart recorded a double-double in his first taste of college basketball, scoring 14 points and snagging 11 rebounds in 27 minutes. With a competitive matchup against 16th-ranked Baylor, expect Stewart's minutes to increase tonight.
Vernon Carey Jr., Duke ($7,500) - Carey Jr. had Duke fans buzzing after scoring 15 points, grabbing three rebounds, and assisting on two baskets in Duke's Countdown to Craziness (intersquad scrimmage). The five-star recruit turned in 24.4 FanDuel points in 25 minutes of action in his first collegiate regular season game. The versatile big man should have a much easier time tonight now that he won't have to deal with Kansas' Udoka Azubuike. With a implied team total around 84, Carey Jr. is one of the top forwards on this slate.
Udoka Azubuike, Kansas ($6,900) - Azubuike struggled to assert himself on the offensive end in Kansas' 68-66 loss to Duke to open the season. The seven footer scored eight points, recorded eight rebounds, and dished out four assists in 30 minutes of action. Hopefully, his uneven performance will reduce his ownership tonight. The senior averaged 1.2 fantasy points per minute in nine games last campaign before an injury ended his season prematurely. If the big man plays around 30 minutes tonight, he should have no problem paying off his declining price tag (started the season at $7,500).
Garrison Brooks, North Carolina ($5,800) - Brooks had a solid performance in the Tar Heels opening night win. The junior scored 10 points, grabbed nine rebounds, assisted on two baskets, recorded one steal, and swatted three shots. The most encouraging part is that Brooks was on the court for 39 minutes. Regarded as the Tar Heels' best defender, Brooks figures to play as many minutes as he can handle while patrolling the paint.
Evan Battey, Colorado ($4,700) - Battey stuffed the stat sheet in the Colorado Buffaloes' first preseason game. The sophomore forward scored 13 points, came away with six rebounds, and dished out three assists in only 13 minutes of action. He followed that up with 10 points in Colorado's second exhibition game. Battey averaged 8.1 points and 4.4 rebounds last season. He's a good source of salary relief on tonight's slate.
